With CPAP, the mask is the thing!
After 6 years using CPAP, and working with over 5000 patients starting on CPAP, I firmly believe that there are only three rules to successfully using CPAP. First, get the best fitting mask you can find. Second, get the best fitting mask you can find, and Finally, get the best fitting mask you can find. OK, a little over the top, but surprisingly accurate. Because the mask is the thing that irritates the most, or the least. And the least is what you need to get to. So, when it comes time to try a mask, go to a supplier that carries many brands and types. Don't ask the price, don't worry about how it looks (try sleeping with your eyes shut and the lights out) and make sure you try the mask when you are connected to a machine. The machine should set at your pressure. You should be lying down on a bed in your normal sleeping position, and you must roll around a little to makes sure that the mask will stay in place during your sleep. Try to find three or four masks that work under these conditions, so you have some alternatives, should your first choice not work out. Write down the alternatives because you know you will forget. Now you can ask the price, because a lower cost to you may help in your decision. Now, here's the important part. Get the supplier to agree to swap the mask for one of the alternatives if the first mask is not comfortable after a few days of use. Most reputable suppliers offer some form of exchange program. Finally, always remember that there is no perfectly fitting CPAP mask - some come close, but none are just right every time they are used. Accept this, learn how to adjust your mask yourself, keep it in top condition, and CPAP therapy is a heck of a lot easier to tolerate.
