Don't Replace, Repair Your CPAP Mask
By Cpap User
CPAP masks can usually last for years if treated with care, but the headgear or straps, the silicon cushion, and even the forehead pads will need replacing after some use. Headgear: Breakdown is usually caused by over-tightening or by perspiration breaking down the elastic component of the strap. Replace the headgear as soon as the elasticity or stretch begins to fail, usually after 9 to 12 months. By replacing the old straps before failure, you will always have a spare set to fall back on if the new set breaks. This is also an easy way to ensure you always have extra clips or similar attachments that may be unique to your mask. Headgear, if washed weekly in warm soapy water, usually lasts for 12 to 18 months, though the tighter you set it, the shorter the lifecycle. Cushion: The silicon cushion should be cleaned every day, especially the surface that touches your skin. Daily cleaning keeps the cushion "sticky" and ensures the best seal possible. Usually cushions last about 6 months before they begin leaking just a little too much for most people. Tightening the headgear will provide short term help, but you then threaten the longevity of the headgear as well. Best to replace the cushion when the seal starts to deteriorate, and again, you will have a backup on hand if the new cushion meets with an accident. I use cheap baby wipes every night on my face and mask, and every morning on the mask.(Why cheap? The cheap ones have less additives on them) What else: Forehead pads and similar replaceable parts are also available from just about any CPAP mask manufacturer. Contact your CPAP supplier for information, and if they can't help, try one of their competitors. Here in Australia we at CPAP Australia carry an extensive range of spare and replacement parts, mainly to keep the high cost of CPAP therapy as low as possible for our customers. To find out what parts are available, go to the website of the mask manufacturer and search their resources section for the brochures, user manuals or component lists of your mask. Alternatively go to the spare and replacement parts section of the CPAP Australia for pdf files of the masks we carry. |
